What is Ranabaali about? (no spoilers)

The film is set in British-ruled South India in the 19th century. Reports place it between roughly 1854 and 1878, and the main events happen during a famine in the Madras Presidency that the film blames on colonial policy. Vijay Deverakonda plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a man from Rayalaseema who turns against the British officers squeezing the villagers and becomes a real problem for them. The main villain is Sir Theodore Hector, a British commissioner played by South African-American actor Arnold Vosloo, best known worldwide as Imhotep in The Mummy.

The romance between Ranabaali and Jayamma runs alongside the rebellion, and reviewers say it gives the first half much of its warmth. The makers have made a point of getting the Rayalaseema dialect, customs and landscape right. Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh publicly praised the trailer for how it recreates the region in the 1800s.

The violence has been talked about too. The trailer led many people to expect an A certificate, but the film got a U/A. Rahul Sankrityan said some of the atrocity scenes were "a bit brutal" and were toned down after feedback from early test audiences.

This is Vijay and Rashmika's third film together after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade. It also reunites Vijay with Rahul Sankrityan, who directed him in Taxiwaala. If you know Rashmika mainly from her Hindi films, she also stars in Maddock's Thamma, which is covered in our Maddock horror-comedy watch order.

Release date, Hindi version and runtime

Ranabaali was first dated 11 September 2026. On 27 August, Mythri Movie Makers shared a new poster moving it to 16 October, the Dussehra holiday window. They did not give a public reason for the move. The film is opening in all five languages on the same day, so the Hindi dubbed version is in cinemas now rather than coming later. The makers also said ticket prices would stay at standard rates with no special hike, according to reports.

The runtime is still unclear. Vijay Deverakonda said a first cut of about 3 hours 20 minutes had been trimmed to around 2 hours 50 minutes. Gulte's review lists 2 hours 58 minutes, while overseas listings, including in the US and France, show 3 hours 5 minutes. Expect a film of close to three hours either way, and check your cinema's listing for the exact show length.

First reviews: sincere, but too long

Early reviews are mixed, and they agree with each other to a surprising degree.

  • 123Telugu – 2.75/5: It praises the attempt to tell a little-known chapter of history, Vijay's earnest performance, Rashmika's role, the songs, the cinematography and the production design. It finds the second half predictable, the action repetitive, the background score weak and the climax lacking in impact, and suggests about 20 minutes could have been cut. Its verdict: "sincere effort but delivers only a moderate impact."
  • Gulte – 2.5/5: It likes the fairly engaging first half, the lead pair's chemistry and a cave fight in the second half. It criticises the predictable narration, patchy VFX in places and a long second half. Its verdict: "Sincere. But, Lacked Impact."
  • Telugu360 – 2.5/5: It calls the story strong and the period setting well made, but says the slow narration drags the film out.
  • Koimoi: It credits Vijay's intensity, the world-building and the sets, but says the film "takes its time to build but rushes through the payoff". It also says the constant killing ends up dulling the violence.

In short, critics like the look, the music and the lead pair, but think the pacing and the ending let them down. Audience word of mouth over the Dussehra weekend will matter more than usual.

Advance booking and early box office

Pre-release numbers were modest for a Vijay Deverakonda film of this size. Sacnilk's final day-one advance report put India bookings at about ₹4.33 crore gross including block seats (₹3.69 crore without), from roughly 2.68 lakh tickets across 2,720 shows. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh accounted for most of that. Both Sacnilk and Koimoi noted that the film was well behind Liger's advance bookings. Koimoi also reported North American pre-sales of about $270,000 including premieres, which trails his previous film Kingdom.

Real-time trackers show early day-one numbers, but no final opening-day figure has been published yet. The film is also up against Jailer 2 in cinemas. For how that opened, see our Jailer 2 vs Drishyam 3 box office report.

When will Ranabaali come to OTT?

No streaming date has been announced. Big Telugu films usually arrive on OTT about four to eight weeks after their theatrical release, so a release around late November or December 2026 is possible. That is only an estimate until the makers confirm a date. A TV premiere usually comes after the streaming release. Until then, Telugu movie channels such as Sun Gemini Movies HD, Maa Movies HD and ETV Cinema are good for Telugu hits. If you want another Telugu period epic in the meantime, Bāhubali: The Epic is on NoWireTV.
