Dhoom 4 is one of the most talked-about Hindi films that hasn't actually been made yet. Yash Raj Films has been developing the next chapter of its bike-chase heist franchise for years, and the rumours change every few months. Here is everything we know about Dhoom 4 so far – release date, cast, story and the latest reports – kept separate from the guesswork.
Dhoom 4 quick facts
- Director: Not officially announced (Ayan Mukerji was reported as the frontrunner in 2025)
- Producer: Aditya Chopra, Yash Raj Films (YRF)
- Lead cast: Not confirmed – Ranbir Kapoor was attached, but reportedly opted out in July 2026
- Release date: Not announced; earlier reports targeted 2027
- Language: Hindi
- Status: In development – the script is reportedly still being written
Dhoom 4 release date
There is no official release date. Some release calendars list Dhoom 4 for 31 October 2026, but nothing backs that up – YRF has made no such announcement, and filming has not been reported as started. In mid-2025, reports said YRF wanted to start shooting in April 2026 and release in 2027. According to a Bollywood Hungama report from July 2026, that plan has slipped and the script is still being developed.
So the honest answer is: not in 2026. A 2027 release is still possible, but only if casting and shooting get going soon.
Dhoom 4 cast: confirmed vs rumoured
Confirmed: As of October 2026, no actor has been officially announced by YRF.
Reported and rumoured:
- Ranbir Kapoor – Many reports from 2024 and 2025 said Ranbir would lead the film, and some suggested he would play the villain in a reboot. In July 2026, Bollywood Hungama reported that Ranbir had decided to opt out after several rounds of talks, and that YRF would recast. Neither Ranbir nor YRF has commented publicly.
- Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra – Earlier reports said the reboot would not bring back the original cop duo of Jai and Ali. This was never officially confirmed either way.
- A South star – Some reports claimed YRF was in talks with a Telugu actor for a key role. No name has been confirmed.
Treat any "final cast" list you see online with caution until YRF announces it.
Dhoom 4 story: what to expect
No plot details have been officially shared. What we do know is the formula that made the franchise work: a stylish, high-tech thief, a cop who is always one step behind, sleek superbikes, big set-piece heists and chart-topping music. Reports from 2025 described Dhoom 4 as a reboot, meaning it may start fresh rather than continue Jai and Ali's story. Anything beyond that – the city, the heist, who the villain is – is speculation for now.
Director and production
Aditya Chopra is producing under the Yash Raj Films banner, as with all the earlier Dhoom films. The director's chair has changed hands in the reports:
- In 2024, Vijay Krishna Acharya, who wrote all three Dhoom films and directed Dhoom 3, was reported to be working on the next script.
- In 2025, Ayan Mukerji (Brahmāstra, War 2) was widely reported as the frontrunner to direct, alongside Ranbir.
- According to the July 2026 report, Aditya Chopra later decided against handing the film to Ayan after War 2. Another report said Aditya Chopra and writer Shridhar Raghavan were locking the script.
In short, there is no officially named director right now.
Box-office expectations and the Dhoom legacy
Dhoom is one of Bollywood's most valuable franchises. Each film was bigger than the last, and Dhoom 3 reportedly became the first Indian film to gross over ₹500 crore worldwide. That is why YRF is taking its time – the next chapter is expected to be a major event film, and the casting of the anti-hero matters more than anything else. The Dhoom villain has always been the real star: John Abraham, Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan all became the face of their films.
The Dhoom franchise so far
| Film | Director | Cops | Villain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhoom (2004) | Sanjay Gadhvi | Abhishek Bachchan (Jai Dixit), Uday Chopra (Ali) | John Abraham as Kabir, leader of a bike-riding robber gang |
| Dhoom 2 (2006) | Sanjay Gadhvi | Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra | Hrithik Roshan as the master thief "Mr A", with Aishwarya Rai as Sunehri |
| Dhoom 3 (2013) | Vijay Krishna Acharya | Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra | Aamir Khan as Sahir, a circus magician robbing a Chicago bank |
Dhoom (2004) was a surprise hit – a slick, Hollywood-style chase film with superbikes and a title track that played everywhere. Dhoom 2 went global, with Hrithik's master-of-disguise thief and the famous "Crazy Kiya Re" and "Dhoom Again" songs. Dhoom 3 moved to Chicago, added Katrina Kaif and a big twist in Aamir's character, and broke box-office records.
