Capcom's fighting game is back on the big screen. Street Fighter, the new live-action film from Legendary Pictures and distributor Paramount Pictures, directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip), opens in US cinemas this weekend, on 16 October 2026, and in India on the same day. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo plays Ken and Callina Liang plays Chun-Li, and Indian action star Vidyut Jammwal makes his Hollywood debut as Dhalsim. Here is the cast, India release details, early box office and reviews, and every Street Fighter movie in order.
What is the new Street Fighter about?
The film is a period piece set in 1993. Ryu and Ken, once close friends, have drifted apart. Chun-Li recruits both of them for the next World Warrior Tournament, and a hidden conspiracy behind the tournament turns them against each other and their own past. The screenplay is by T.J. Fixman and Sakurai. It is rated PG-13, runs about two hours, and its flashbacks use hand-drawn 2D animation.

Street Fighter release in India: date and Hindi dub
Zee News and Bollywood Hungama both report that Street Fighter releases in Indian cinemas on 16 October 2026, the same day as the US, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. So yes, there is a Hindi dubbed version in cinemas from day one.
Vidyut Jammwal's Dhalsim is the big draw for Indian audiences. Hollywood Reporter India wrote that his action scenes stand out in the film's new trailer. Pre-release demand in India looked modest: according to Sacnilk's advance-booking tracker, opening-day pre-sales across all languages stood at about ₹42 lakh (excluding block seats) by Friday morning.
It is in cinemas only; no OTT date has been announced.
Opening weekend box office: estimates and first numbers
Every figure below is a pre-release estimate or an early studio-sourced number, not a final weekend gross.
- Thursday previews: about $4 million in the US, according to Deadline, below the $5.2 million previews of Mortal Kombat II in May 2026.
- Deadline: expects a US opening "north of $30 million" and roughly $70 million worldwide (Koimoi also reported the $70 million global figure from Deadline).
- Variety and Box Office Pro: a domestic range of $25–35 million. Box Office Pro's earlier long-range forecast was a little higher, at $30–40 million.
- Box Office Theory: lowered its forecast to around $22–25 million after late press screenings, within a wider $22–32 million range.
- NRG tracking: Puck reported a high-end figure of $43 million, but other trackers did not come close to it.
The film reportedly cost a net $82 million, co-financed by Legendary and Capcom, with Paramount handling distribution. That leaves the opening somewhere between $22 million and $43 million depending on whom you ask, and most trackers sit near $30 million, roughly where Mortal Kombat II landed ($38.5 million). The 1994 film opened to about $9.5 million in the US, according to The Numbers.
Early reviews: what critics are saying
Reviews are split, leaning negative. On release day the film sat at around 46–47% on Rotten Tomatoes from about 60 reviews, and Metacritic reportedly shows 45/100, "mixed or average".
The case for it: after the social-media embargo lifted on 13 October, many first reactions were positive. Viewers praised the fight choreography, the 2D animated flashbacks, the 90s-throwback tone and the leads; Koji, Centineo and Liang were named most often. Deadline's review calls it cheesy but action-packed, Discussing Film calls it "messy yet oddly compelling", and Screen Rant calls it campy fun, if not campy greatness.
The case against: Variety's review says the film starts well but falls apart around its midpoint tournament. The Playlist argues that it is so busy winking at its own absurdity that it forgets to tell a story. Common complaints: jokes that miss, a muddled third act and a sequel-bait ending.
Street Fighter movies in order
The 2026 film is the third live-action Street Fighter feature. Here is every film, live-action and animated, in release order. TV series such as Street Fighter II V (1995) and the 1995 American cartoon are left out.
- Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) – the Japanese anime film from Group TAC. Ryu, Ken and the World Warriors take on M. Bison's Shadowlaw. Many fans still rate it the best Street Fighter adaptation.
- Street Fighter (1994) – the first live-action film, with Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as M. Bison and Kylie Minogue as Cammy. It was mauled by critics on release but is now loved as camp.
- Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation (1999) – an anime film in which a young Ryu struggles with the dark power inside him.
- Street Fighter Alpha: Generations (2005) – a short anime film about Ryu, Akuma (Gouki) and Evil Ryu.
- Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind (2009) – an animated prequel to the game Street Fighter IV, bundled with the game's special edition.
- Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) – the second live-action film, with Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li and Neal McDonough as Bison. It was poorly received and flopped.
- Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist (2014) – a fan-favourite live-action web series about Ryu and Ken's training under Gouken. It was followed by Resurrection (2016).
- Street Fighter (2026) – the new Legendary/Paramount film, in cinemas now.
You only need the 2026 film; it does not continue any earlier movie.
