John Wick started in 2014 as a small revenge film about a retired hitman and his dog, and grew into one of the biggest action franchises in the world. Keanu Reeves plays the title role, Chad Stahelski has directed every main chapter, and the series now includes four films, a spin-off movie, a prequel TV series and several projects in the works. Here is the right order to watch, spoiler-light recaps of Chapters 1–3, where Chapter 4 and Ballerina fit, and the latest confirmed news on John Wick: Chapter 5 as of October 2026.

The first three chapters are on NoWireTV, on the website, the Android app and Android TV / Fire TV:

Chapter 4, Ballerina and The Continental are not on NoWireTV right now – they are covered below so you know where they fit.

Release order or story order? For the films, release order and story order are almost the same: Chapters 1 to 4 in sequence. Only two pieces move around. The Continental is a prequel about a young Winston, so it goes first in story order – but it is best watched after the films, because it leans on characters you already know. Ballerina takes place during the events of Parabellum, so you can watch it between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, or after Chapter 4 as it was released.

John Wick (2014): the dog, the car and the Continental

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has quit the underworld and is mourning his wife, Helen, who left him a puppy before she died. When Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen), the reckless son of Russian crime boss Viggo (Michael Nyqvist), steals John's car and kills the dog, Viggo realises exactly who his son has angered. What follows is a lean, 101-minute revenge story that introduces the series' rules: gold coins, the Continental hotel run by Winston (Ian McShane) and its concierge Charon (Lance Reddick), and a "no business on hotel grounds" code.

What to remember: the Continental's rules, Winston, and the idea that John once pulled off an "impossible task" to leave the life.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017): the marker

John wants to stay retired, but Italian crime boss Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) holds a "marker" – a blood oath John cannot refuse. It sends him to Rome on a job that turns the whole underworld against him. The film widens the world: the High Table that rules the assassins, Santino's bodyguard Ares (Ruby Rose), rival hitman Cassian (Common) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne).

What to remember: John breaks a core Continental rule near the end, and it costs him everything going into Chapter 3.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019): excommunicado

Picking up minutes after Chapter 2, John is "excommunicado" – cut off from the network – with a $14 million bounty on his head. He runs from New York to Casablanca, calling in favours from Sofia (Halle Berry) and the Director (Anjelica Huston), while an Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) from the High Table punishes everyone who helped him. Mark Dacascos plays Zero, a cheerful assassin who is a big fan of John's.

What to remember: the High Table's reach, Winston's choices and the Bowery King's anger – all set up Chapter 4.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

The longest and biggest film in the series follows John across Osaka, Berlin and Paris as he tries to buy his way out of the High Table's grip. Bill Skarsgård plays the Marquis, a High Table official, and Donnie Yen plays Caine, a blind assassin and old friend of John's who is forced to hunt him. Hiroyuki Sanada and Rina Sawayama join for the Osaka chapter. It was Lance Reddick's last appearance as Charon in a main chapter; he died shortly before the film opened in March 2023.

Ballerina (2025)

Ana de Armas leads From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, directed by Len Wiseman. She plays Eve, a young woman trained by the Ruska Roma (the group run by Anjelica Huston's Director) who sets out to avenge her father. It is set during the events of Parabellum, and Keanu Reeves appears as John Wick, alongside Ian McShane and Lance Reddick.

The Continental (2023)

This three-part prequel series tells how a young Winston (Colin Woodell) took over the Continental hotel in 1970s New York, with Mel Gibson as Cormac, the man who runs it. It streamed on Peacock in the US. John Wick himself does not appear.

John Wick: Chapter 5 and what's next

Here is what has been confirmed by more than one reliable source as of October 2026 – and what has not:

  • John Wick: Chapter 5 – Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon in April 2025 that Keanu Reeves will return, with Chad Stahelski directing. There is no release date and no confirmed start of filming yet. Many websites claim a script is finished or that shooting is set for 2027 – none of that has been confirmed by Lionsgate or the major trade papers, so treat it as rumour.
  • Caine spin-off – Donnie Yen returns as Caine and also directs. Filming began in April 2026, and Rina Sawayama returns as Akira. No release date has been announced.
  • John Wick video game – In February 2026 Saber Interactive and Lionsgate announced a big-budget John Wick game for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Keanu Reeves returning and Stahelski involved. Its story is set years before the first film and has no title or release date yet.
  • Other projects – an animated prequel with Reeves voicing John and a TV series called John Wick: Under the High Table, set after Chapter 4, have been reported to be in development. Neither has a date.
