Zach Cregger's Resident Evil has done something no film in the series managed in 24 years: it is the best-reviewed and, by most trackers, the highest-grossing Resident Evil movie ever. The Barbarian and Weapons director's reboot, starring Austin Abrams, opened on 18 September 2026 in the US and India and has crossed roughly $320 million worldwide. If it has sent you back to the older films, here is every Resident Evil movie in order – live-action and animated – plus what you need to know about the new one.

Resident Evil (2026): the new film at a glance

  • Director: Zach Cregger, who co-wrote it with Shay Hatten.
  • Cast: Austin Abrams leads as Bryan, a medical courier. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser play supporting roles.
  • Release: 18 September 2026 in the US. In India, Sony Pictures released it the same day in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, including IMAX screens.
  • Runtime: 94 minutes. The reported budget is about $75 million.

What is the story? (spoiler-light)

Bryan is a medical courier making a delivery in Raccoon City when an outbreak turns the night into a fight for survival. The film runs alongside the events of the 1998 game Resident Evil 2 – the famous Raccoon City outbreak – but follows a new character rather than Leon, Claire or Jill. Umbrella Corporation, the company behind the virus, is very much part of the picture.

Cregger has described it as an original story that still follows the games' lore, not a retelling of any single game. The CEO of Constantin Film, one of the producers, said he was given "carte blanche" with his vision.

Is it a reboot? Is it connected to the old films?

Yes, it is a reboot, and no, you do not need to watch anything first. It has no story link to the six Milla Jovovich films or to Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). It is the series' second reboot, and its only ties are to the games. If you know the games, you will spot the world; if you don't, the film works on its own.

Box office and reviews

The film opened at number one with about $60 million in North America and $108.3 million worldwide – the biggest opening in the franchise and in Cregger's career. It is also the first Resident Evil film to cross $100 million in the US; the previous best there, Afterlife (2010), had made about $60 million.

Exact worldwide figures depend on the tracker and the date:

  • The Numbers: about $323.9 million (US $142.2 million, international $181.7 million) as of 14–15 October.
  • Wikipedia, citing Box Office Mojo: about $325 million as of 14 October.
  • Reports around 13 October: about $320 million.

That puts it ahead of The Final Chapter (2016), the old record holder. Its total is given as about $312 million in many reports and about $314 million on Box Office Mojo – the new film is ahead on either number. Adjusted for inflation, the 2016 film may still be ahead.

India: Sacnilk estimates about ₹20.9 crore net (₹24.5 crore gross) up to 15 October, with English the biggest version (about ₹14.3 crore net), then Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The Numbers lists India at about $2.5 million.

Reviews: Critics have been far kinder than they were to any earlier film. Rotten Tomatoes shows about 96% from nearly 300 reviews, Metacritic shows 79, and audiences gave it a "B+" CinemaScore. The highest score any of the six Jovovich films managed on Rotten Tomatoes was 38%.

A note on dates: The Final Chapter opened in Japan in December 2016 but reached North America in January 2017, so some lists call it a 2017 film. Paul W.S. Anderson wrote and produced all six Jovovich films but directed only four of them.

Release order vs story order

Unlike the Conjuring movies, Resident Evil has no single timeline. It has four separate continuities, and each one can be watched on its own:

  1. The Alice saga (2002–2016): the six Milla Jovovich films. Here story order and release order are the same – each picks up where the last one ended, starting in Umbrella's underground lab, the Hive, and ending back there.
  2. Welcome to Raccoon City (2021): a one-off reboot that retells the first two games in a single night. No sequel followed.
  3. Resident Evil (2026): Cregger's standalone reboot, set alongside the Resident Evil 2 outbreak.
  4. The CG animated films: these are set in the same timeline as the games, and their release order matches their story order – Degeneration (set in 2005), Damnation (2011), Vendetta (2014) and Death Island (2015). The four-episode CG series Infinite Darkness (2021), set in 2006, fits between Degeneration and Damnation if you want everything.

Short on time? Watch the 2026 film first – it needs no homework. If you want more after that, the animated films are the closest to the games, and the Jovovich films are the big, loud action saga that kept the series in cinemas for 14 years.
