DC is the Tamil action drama that turned director Lokesh Kanagaraj (Kaithi, Vikram, Leo) into a leading man. The film opened in cinemas on 7 August 2026, has been streaming on Sun NXT since early September, and according to reports reaches a second OTT platform, SonyLIV, today, 16 October, in five languages including Hindi. What does "DC" stand for?

The title is the initials of its two leads, Devadas and Chandra. The film is a loose, violent reworking of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel Devdas, the same source behind Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas and Anurag Kashyap's Dev.D. In an interview with Variety India, Matheswaran said Dev.D was where his fascination started, that he saw the story working as an action film, and described his version as Devdas meeting Bonnie and Clyde.

What is DC about? (no spoilers)

Lokesh plays Devadas, usually just called Das, a volatile gangster who runs a small outlaw crew. Early on, a custodial killing of an innocent man pushes Das into open conflict with the police, and the crew ends up on the run while an officer hunts them. Along the way Das crosses paths with Chandra, a woman trying to escape exploitation and a life she did not choose. Their alliance is the heart of the film, and it gets more complicated as loyalties shift.

Release timeline: cinemas first, then OTT

DC did have a full theatrical run before streaming. The dates, in order:

  1. 31 July 2026 was the first announced release date.
  2. In mid-July the makers moved it a week to 7 August, to avoid clashing with Vijay's Jana Nayagan. The same announcement confirmed the 'A' certificate.
  3. 7 August: DC opened in cinemas worldwide.
  4. 27 August: trade tracker Sacnilk reported that it had crossed about ₹100.85 crore gross worldwide in 20 days, with around ₹77.50 crore from India.
  5. 4 September: the first OTT premiere, on Sun NXT, in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, as reported by Sacnilk, Onmanorama and The Week.
  6. 16 October: according to reports, the film arrives on a second OTT platform, SonyLIV, this time in five languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Two points cause confusion online. First, the September OTT date and the October date are not a contradiction. They are two separate streaming windows, and the October one is the first to add an official Hindi stream. Second, the budget is not settled. Reports range from about ₹20–25 crore to around ₹40 crore, and the makers have not published a figure. Either way, a ₹100-crore gross worldwide makes DC a clear success for an A-rated debut.

How critics rated Lokesh Kanagaraj as an actor

Reviews were mostly positive, with published ratings ranging from 3/5 to 5/5. The most common complaint was that the story feels familiar. Lokesh's performance got praise almost everywhere:

  • The Week (5/5): "Lokesh understood the assignment." The reviewer liked that Das is mostly stoic rather than the usual rugged hero. Wamiqa, it said, "brings the right measure of confusion, disbelief, exhilaration, and resolve to her complex role", though it noted some awkward dubbing.
  • Pinkvilla (4/5): "Lokesh Kanagaraj knocks it out of the park with his acting debut." It added that "the true hero, beyond the cast and writers, is Anirudh Ravichander."
  • Gulte (3.25/5): "Lokesh Kanagaraj in the role of Das is excellent." It praised the background score and the stretch from the interval to the climax, and criticised parts of the editing and the amount of violence.
  • BollywoodShaadis (3/5): "The performance lands because his body language fits the role." Its headline said the familiar narrative falls flat.
  • The News Minute (no star rating): "The director-turned-actor offers a grounded performance that soon has you rooting for Das," and "Wamiqa easily carries Chandra's rage."

Audiences on social media were mostly positive in opening week, and Anirudh's background score came up again and again. Arun Matheswaran told IANS that directing another director was easy, and that the only thing he asked Lokesh to do was be himself.

Is DC part of the LCU?

No. Nothing connects DC to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Lokesh acts in it but did not write or direct it, the story is Matheswaran's take on Devdas, and none of the reviews mention LCU characters or links. When asked about the LCU during this period, Lokesh said it will continue with Kaithi 2, Vikram 2 and a standalone Rolex film after his next film as director, with Allu Arjun. Reports since DC's success say Lokesh and Matheswaran may work together again, but nothing has been officially announced and there is no DC sequel.

The link people do notice is behind the camera. DC shares its producer (Sun Pictures) and composer (Anirudh) with this season's Jailer 2. That is a business connection, not a story one.

Where to watch Tamil films and channels on NoWireTV

DC is not on NoWireTV. For Tamil cinema on live TV, try Sun TV HD and the movie channel KTV HD. For Anirudh's music, there is Sun Music HD. If you want another Anirudh soundtrack, our library has Dhanush's Thiruchitrambalam.
