Godzilla Minus Zero is Takashi Yamazaki's sequel to Godzilla Minus One, the Toho film that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It opens in Japan on 3 November 2026 and in North America and the UK on 6 November, with India reportedly the same day. That is the day after Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part 1, and both films were made for IMAX, so the two are competing for the same premium screens. Here are the dates, cast, story so far, trailers, the IMAX clash and every Godzilla film in order.
Godzilla Minus Zero quick facts
- Director, writer and VFX lead: Takashi Yamazaki
- Studio: Toho (Japan and international); GKIDS in North America, with Cineplex Pictures in Canada
- Setting: 1949, two years after Godzilla Minus One
- Format: The first Japanese production filmed for IMAX
- World premiere: New York Film Festival, 26 September 2026
- Rating: Reported to be rated R in the US
Godzilla Minus Zero release date by country
| Country | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Tuesday, 3 November 2026 | Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 original |
| USA and Canada | Friday, 6 November 2026 | Wide release; reports say IMAX early-access shows start on 3 November |
| UK and Ireland | Friday, 6 November 2026 | IMAX and regular cinemas |
| India | Friday, 6 November 2026 (reported) | No Indian distributor has been named yet |
| Other markets | Same week | Toho says Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand will get dates separately |
The India date needs a word of caution. Variety India reported 6 November for India back in April. In October, Bollywood Hungama reported that Kamal Gianchandani of PVR INOX confirmed the film would release in India, probably in the same week as Ramayana. Neither Toho nor a local distributor has announced the Indian date, so treat it as very likely, not final.
Returning cast and new faces
Most of the Minus One survivors are back, according to Toho's official cast announcements:
- Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, the former kamikaze pilot who faced Godzilla in the first film
- Minami Hamabe as Noriko, who survived Godzilla's first attack on Tokyo (some materials list her as Noriko Shikishima, others as Noriko Oishi)
- Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, now head of a Disaster Response Bureau
- Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Captain Seiji Akitsu of the minesweeper Shinseimaru
- Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, the neighbour, who now runs an orphanage
- Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta, former captain of the destroyer Yukikaze
The main new addition is Min Tanaka (Kokuho) as Kanji Murakami, a biologist with deep psychological scars from the war. The September trailer added Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, a weather forecaster in the Disaster Response Bureau, and Jun Kunimura as Dr. Ogata.
What is the story? (no spoilers)
Toho's synopsis is short. In 1949, Japan is holding on to a hard-won peace two years after Godzilla's attack, and the Shikishima family faces a new disaster. The September trailer confirms what many fans expected: Godzilla was not completely destroyed at the end of the first film. It also teases a new operation to destroy him. The teasers and early reactions describe him as bigger than before.
The tagline, "There is no third time. Everything ends here.", suggests Yamazaki is not setting up a trilogy. The poster shows Godzilla wrapped in blue energy with gold lightning striking from above. Some fans read that as a hint of King Ghidorah, but Toho has not named any second monster, and the official material only talks about a new threat.
Trailers so far
- April 2026: First-look teaser, announcing the film and the November window.
- 9 July 2026: Second teaser and the official poster, along with character stills and the Japan, UK and North America dates.
- 8 September 2026: Official trailer, which confirms Godzilla's return and introduces the new cast.
Early reactions after the New York premiere were very positive, especially for the visual effects and the post-war human drama. Critics disagreed on one point: some said it is better than Minus One, while /Film's Jeremy Mathai felt it falls slightly short.
The Ramayana IMAX clash, explained
Ramayana: Part 1 starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash is confirmed for a worldwide release on Thursday, 5 November, with Godzilla Minus Zero following on 6 November. Both carry the Filmed For IMAX label, and India has only a limited number of IMAX screens. Here is what has been reported:
- India: Sacnilk and NewsBytes, both citing industry sources, say Godzilla may get just one show a day at many IMAX properties, with the rest going to Ramayana. No screen-sharing deal has been announced, and exhibitors may change the split based on bookings.
- Overseas: Godzilla is expected to be stronger in North America, where it has the head start of early IMAX shows. Some locations may play both films.
- Paid previews: Reports say Ramayana is considering paid previews on 4 November, but that plan has not been finalised.
In short, the clash is real but uneven. In India, Ramayana is the favourite for premium screens. For a full look at what is opening that week, see our Diwali 2026 movies guide.
Godzilla movies in order
There are two separate continuities. Toho's Japanese films mostly reboot every era, and Minus Zero only follows on from Minus One. Hollywood's MonsterVerse is its own shared universe with King Kong.
Toho (Japan)
- Showa era (1954–1975): 15 films, from Godzilla (1954) to Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975).
- Heisei era (1984–1995): 7 films, from The Return of Godzilla (1984) to Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995).
- Millennium era (1999–2004): 6 films, from Godzilla 2000 to Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).
- Reiwa era: Shin Godzilla (2016), the animated trilogy (2017–2018), Godzilla Minus One (2023) and Godzilla Minus Zero (2026).
MonsterVerse (Legendary / Warner Bros.)
- Godzilla (2014)
- Kong: Skull Island (2017)
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
- Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
- Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
- Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, due 26 March 2027
Separately, TriStar's 1998 Godzilla belongs to neither series. To catch up before the sequel, the only film you need is Godzilla Minus One.
