Udta Teer: Release Date, Cast, Story and Why It Was Delayed

Udta Teer is a Hindi spy comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan. It now opens in cinemas on Friday, 23 October 2026, two weeks after its previous date of 9 October. It is also the second time the film has moved. What is Udta Teer about?

Ayushmann plays Bilal Ahmed, a Pakistani agent who loses his memory in an explosion during a mission. When he wakes up he believes he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer. He is as patriotic as ever, only now he has no idea which country he is being patriotic for. According to coverage of the trailer, Sara Ali Khan's character reminds him he joined the Counter Terrorism Squad after his parents died in a blast.

Some reports add that the story strands this amnesiac agent on the zero line between India and Pakistan. Ayushmann has called it a pro-India patriotic comedy for the whole family. Going by the makers' description, the film plays the identity confusion for laughs rather than as a heavy spy thriller. For Ayushmann that means a return to the offbeat, concept-led comedies that made his name.

Udta Teer cast and crew

One name in that list matters more than most. Mukul Dev, who died in May 2025 aged 54, shot his part in Udta Teer before his death, and this is his last film. At the trailer launch, the cast and director paid tribute to him.

A note on cast lists online: at least one news aggregator named other actresses as the female lead. Every major report has Sara Ali Khan, so ignore those lists.

Why was Udta Teer postponed?

The film has moved twice. When it was announced, the date was 11 September 2026, around Ganesh Chaturthi. It was then pushed to 9 October. On 2 October, a week before that date, the makers moved it again to 23 October. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the new date on X.

The makers gave no detailed reason for the September move. For the October change they put out a short statement. Here is what they said, and what reports added:

• Stated reason: the makers said the new date gives the film "a cleaner release window and a stronger theatrical runway", without having to fight for screens in a "suddenly crowded marketplace".
• Reported context: according to reports, the shift avoids competing with Drishyam: The Conclusion, as well as Prahaar and Nayyi Navelli. Both of those open on 16 October.
• Reported, single outlet: one report said the later date would bring better footfall once the current big releases had finished their run in theatres.

Udta Teer trailer and songs

• Trailer 1: launched in late September at a press event with Ayushmann, Sara, director Akash Kaushik and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor, Achin Jain and Apoorva Mehta. It sets up the memory-loss premise and the comedy around it.
• Trailer 2: released by Dharma Productions on 13 October.
• "Choozay": the first big song, released on 10 October. It is rapper Emiway Bantai's first Bollywood track. Sachin-Jigar composed it, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Emiway wrote the lyrics, and Emiway and Jigar Saraiya sing it.

More songs are expected before release, but no full album tracklist had been announced at the time of writing.

Udta Teer release date and what else is out that week

Udta Teer arrives on 23 October. That is not Diwali itself: Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. The date sits in the run-up to the festival, between the 16 October releases and the big Diwali film, Ramayana: Part 1, on 5 November. With about two weeks before Ramayana takes over most screens, Udta Teer gets a short but clear run.
