Vishwanath & Sons (2026) is the Tamil romantic family drama starring Suriya and Mamitha Baiju, written and directed by Telugu filmmaker Venky Atluri (Vaathi, Lucky Baskhar). It released in cinemas on 14 August 2026, the Independence Day weekend, and its age-gap love story and surrogacy theme made it one of the most talked-about South Indian films of the year. Here is where to watch Vishwanath & Sons online, what the story is about, who is in it, and how it ends.

What language is Vishwanath & Sons in?

Many viewers assume it is a Telugu film because the director and the producers come from the Telugu industry, but Vishwanath & Sons was made in Tamil, with Tamil dialogues by K. N. Vijayakumar, according to reports. A Telugu version was released as well, and the later streaming release added Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada versions.

Story (no spoilers)

Sanjay Vishwanath is a former Olympic-level shooter in his 40s, rich, successful and firmly against marriage – a wound left by his father, who walked out on his mother for another woman. His mother, Nirmala Devi, wants grandchildren and the family line to continue. Sanjay's solution is very modern: he becomes a father through surrogacy and brings a baby boy home.

Life gets complicated when his son falls seriously ill and the search for help leads Sanjay to Maddy, a happy-go-lucky young woman in her 20s with a very different outlook on life. As she becomes part of the child's life and his household, the clash between Sanjay's old-fashioned caution and Maddy's spontaneity drives much of the humour – and a relationship neither of them planned. Alongside the romance runs a family thread about Sanjay's father and the second family he started, which forces Sanjay to face old anger.

Box office

The film opened strongly. Trade reports said it crossed ₹100 crore worldwide within its first weekend. Later totals vary a lot between outlets – some reports call it a ₹260 crore hit – so treat any single final figure with caution. What is clear is that it was a commercial hit, arriving three months after Suriya's action film Karuppu.

What critics said

Reviews were mostly positive on the performances and mixed on the writing. The Week called it a warm but imperfect family drama, and The News Minute described it as a genuinely wholesome watch, praising Suriya, Mamitha Baiju and Radikaa Sarathkumar. Gulte singled out Mamitha Baiju as the heart of the film. The Hollywood Reporter India was far harsher, calling it a plasticky family drama that is watchable mainly because of Suriya. Common complaints were the predictable turns, an underused second half for Maddy and a subplot about the father's second family that some felt was a film of its own.

Ending explained

Spoiler warning: this section reveals how Vishwanath & Sons ends. Skip to the FAQ if you have not watched it yet.

Maddy turns out to be the boy's biological mother – she had agreed to the surrogacy arrangement for money, having grown up in an orphanage and needing to pay for her education. That is why only she can help when the child needs a bone marrow transplant. Sanjay falls for her, but the age gap and the fear of repeating his father's mistakes make him push her away. Maddy refuses to give up her son and goes to court, and the judge orders the three of them to live under one roof for six months.

Just as they start to feel like a family, Sanjay's mother dies. Her death makes him confront the anger he has carried against his father, and he finally accepts his half-sister from his father's second family, realising she was never to blame.

The final stretch jumps ahead in time. Maddy returns after finishing her studies and asks Sanjay about marriage. He does not answer directly – instead he tells her about the hospital he is building in Chennai and asks her to run it. It is not a proposal, but it is his way of saying he wants her in his and their son's future, and the film closes on the three of them together. Venky Atluri has said in interviews that the first draft had a hug, a kiss and a clear happily-ever-after, and that Suriya pushed for a more restrained ending. Critics were split: some found the open ending mature, while The News Minute felt abrupt jump cuts made the climax confusing.
