Story

The death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj leaves the young Maratha kingdom facing its biggest test. In Delhi, Aurangzeb believes the Marathas are now weak and turns his full army towards the Deccan. Sambhaji, crowned as the new Chhatrapati, refuses to bow. He takes the fight to the Mughals while also dealing with plots and mistrust inside his own court.

Chhaava is a large-scale, emotional war drama. It moves between big battle sequences and quieter moments with his wife Yesubai and his close friend, the poet Kavi Kalash. The final act is intense and hard to watch – this is not a light film.

The true story of Sambhaji Maharaj

Sambhaji was the eldest son of Shivaji Maharaj and became the second ruler of the Maratha kingdom after his father died in 1680. He was formally crowned in 1681. For the next several years he defended the kingdom against the Mughal empire, after Aurangzeb moved south with a huge army to finish the Marathas, and he also fought other regional powers of the time.

In early 1689 Sambhaji and his adviser Kavi Kalash were captured by Mughal forces at Sangameshwar in the Konkan. Both were executed in March 1689 near Tulapur, close to Pune, after reportedly refusing to give in to Aurangzeb's demands. His death did not end the Maratha resistance – it carried on under his brother Rajaram and, later, Maharani Tarabai.

The film is a dramatised version of these events, adapted from Shivaji Sawant's well-known Marathi novel Chhava ("lion cub"). Some scenes and dialogues are creative additions, and historians have different views on parts of Sambhaji's life, so treat the film as a tribute rather than a history lesson.

Chhaava box office

Chhaava was one of the biggest Hindi hits of 2025. It crossed ₹500 crore net at the Hindi box office within weeks, and trade trackers put its final worldwide gross at roughly ₹800 crore. It stayed the year's top Hindi earner for months, until Dhurandhar overtook it at the end of the year.

Why watch it

Vicky Kaushal's fierce, physical performance is the reason most people watch Chhaava, and the climax is one of the most talked-about scenes in recent Hindi cinema. A. R. Rahman's score adds weight to the battle scenes. If you like historical epics such as Padmaavat, or war stories like 120 Bahadur, add this one to your list.
