War 2 (2025) is the Hindi spy action thriller that puts Hrithik Roshan back in the shoes of rogue agent Major Kabir Dhaliwal and pits him against Jr NTR in his first Hindi film. Directed by Ayan Mukerji for Yash Raj Films, it co-stars Kiara Advani and released in cinemas on 14 August 2025, the Independence Day weekend. It is the sixth film in the YRF Spy Universe. Story (spoiler-light)

Years after the events of War (2019), Kabir Dhaliwal is no longer working for India's intelligence agency. He has turned into a gun for hire and gets drawn into a powerful criminal syndicate. To stop him, the agency sends Major Vikram Chelapathi, a special units officer every bit as skilled and stubborn as Kabir. What follows is a cat-and-mouse chase across several countries, with old loyalties, a personal history between the two men and Kabir's past with the Luthra family all coming back into play.

That is as far as we will go without spoilers. One tip: stay through the end credits. The post-credits scene sets up Alpha, the next film in the universe.

Box office

War 2 opened big but slowed down quickly after mixed-to-negative reviews, and it went head to head with Rajinikanth's Coolie, which released on the same day. The final numbers depend on which tracker you read, and they do not agree:

• Sacnilk puts the worldwide gross at about ₹364 crore, with about ₹236.5 crore net in India.
• Bollywood Hungama puts the worldwide gross lower, at about ₹303 crore, with about ₹185 crore net in India.

The budget was reported at anywhere between ₹300 crore and ₹400 crore, so on either set of numbers the film was seen as a box office disappointment. Even its critics, though, tended to praise the action set pieces and the screen presence of the two leads.

YRF Spy Universe watch order

Yash Raj Films' Spy Universe ties together three agents – Tiger, Kabir and Pathaan – and now a fourth, Alpha. For now, release order is also the best viewing order: each film is set in the present day, and the cameos only land if you have seen the earlier ones.

How they connect: the first two Tiger films stood on their own; War introduced Kabir; Pathaan was the film that openly linked them, with Salman Khan's Tiger turning up to help Pathaan; and Tiger 3 returned the favour. War 2 then carries Kabir's story forward and hands over to Alpha in its post-credits scene.

Alpha – the newest film

Alpha, the universe's first female-led film, stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, with Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol, and is set after the events of War 2. Its road to the screen was bumpy: first announced for 25 December 2025, it was pushed to 17 April 2026 for more VFX time and finally reached cinemas on 3 July 2026. Hrithik Roshan appears in a cameo as Kabir. Reviews were mixed to negative, and the film collected under ₹100 crore worldwide, according to Bollywood Hungama figures.

What's next for the Spy Universe

• Pathaan 2: announced in 2024 and still listed as in development, with no release date as of October 2026.
• Tiger vs Pathaan: the planned Salman Khan–Shah Rukh Khan face-off is the big question mark. Reports in February 2026 said Yash Raj Films had shelved or paused it over rising costs, while other reports quoting insiders said it was not shelved, only on hold. YRF has made no official announcement either way, so treat it as on hold until the studio says otherwise.
