Story

Jaswinder Ahuja – Jass to everyone – is a cheerful wedding photographer. His marriage to Bani is falling apart because the two want different things: Jass is ready for children, while Bani is focused on her career.

When Jass walks away from the marriage, life takes him abroad, where he meets Preet, a London girl he reportedly saves from drowning. A new romance begins – until a string of shocking revelations turns his life upside down. What follows is classic David Dhawan territory: lies piling on lies, two women, family drama and a hero trying desperately to keep everyone from finding out the truth.

Where does the title come from?

The name is a nod to "Ishq Sona Hai", a song from David Dhawan's 1999 hit Biwi No.1, which starred Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Sushmita Sen. The new film goes further – it also carries a recreated version of the Biwi No.1 chartbuster "Chunnari Chunnari", reworked by composers Akshay and IP Singh. The original composer, Anu Malik, publicly cheered Varun's dance on it, though many fans on social media still preferred the 1999 version.

The songs also landed the film in a legal fight before release: producer Vashu Bhagnani's Puja Entertainment, which made Biwi No.1, went to the Bombay High Court claiming the tracks were used without permission. The makers maintained they hold the rights.

David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan together

This is another father-son outing for the pair. Their earlier films together include:

• Main Tera Hero (2014) – Varun's first film with his father
• Judwaa 2 (2017) – a new take on David Dhawan's own 1997 Salman Khan comedy
• Coolie No. 1 (2020) – a remake of the 1995 Govinda hit

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai follows the same formula – fast gags, colourful songs and a hero stuck in a mess of his own making.

Why watch it

Critics were divided – several felt the jokes belong to another decade – but most agreed Varun Dhawan gives the film everything he has, and Mrunal and Pooja bring plenty of charm. If you grew up on Biwi No.1 and Judwaa-style masala comedies, the nostalgia alone makes it worth a watch.
